Here comes the second…
Jocotenango was yours! The first Children’s Festival en Jocotenango on the 23rd of November in 2007 was a great success. We reclaimed our community through a festival that promoted the participation of children, demonstrating that we deserve to live in a peaceful and clean place with many public spaces for recreation and expression. The Children’s Festival was the first space of that sort for Jocotenango. The organizers of the first Festival made a call to action knowing in advance that this was going to be a process, and that this first Festival was only the beginning.
The objectives of this activity were to:
-Promote childhood and the rights of children.
-Strengthening and promoting tourism for the economic advance of our community by elevating and bettering the image of the Municipality.
Our main objective was to reclaim the public recreation spaces in our community, mostly for our little ones. Reading our past objectives and evaluating the activity, we noticed that this last objective was our greatest success. However, we realized that there was one objective that we did not achieve in a way that we wanted to:
-Facilitate the participation of our children and community through cultural, academic, and recreational activities.
Do we need a different festival? The second festival comes with that objective in mind, we decided not to continue with the same formula, but rather to venture into a new methodology, while being very careful not to loose the essence or the gains that characterized the first festival. Now, in 2008, the second festival comes recharged and modified, its objectives being:
Creativity and teamwork as a tool to:
-Facilitate unconventional learning options as motivation for a better integral development of the child.
-Develop aptitudes in the child that will motivate him or her to search for, and to be the manager of his or her own development.
-Prevent crime.
How are we going to achieve these new objectives that appear to be great challenges? We chose to offer meaningful learning techniques based in play. We will carry out a week of discovery and growth for the children by means of workshops given by people who like what they do and more importantly, believe in what they do. The workshops that will be offered are:
Each workshop can be divided into three blocks:
-Theory – Experience – Practice
Painting: drawing, cartooning
Theater: folk dance, miming, comedy, dance, and performance
Literary Expression: poetry, and storytelling.
Street Performance: Stilts, Juggling
Environment: Recycling, conscientiousness
Photography
Urban Art
The Second Children’s Festival will take place the 24th through the 29th of November. This week we will need the help of volunteers to create the best festival possible to benefit of the children of Jocotenango. We’re waiting for you!
